Tame Impala
Lonerism
Modular / Interscope - 2 LP set in a thick gatefold jacket
2012 release from the Australian Alt-Psych rockers. Kevin Parker (vocals/guitar) and Dominic Simper (bass) formed Tame Impala as 13-year-olds in Perth in 1999, sticking to bedroom recordings until 2007, when Jay Watson joined them on drums and backing vocals. Cocooned away inside walls of Psychedelic Fuzz in Western Australia they re-created their preferred period one song at a time with the aid of gear and production techniques that sounded like they hadn't been dusted off since 1968. Music beamed in from the sun-blanched 60s and an effortless, Beatlesesque melodicism, Parker's effusive songwriting and guitar talents are magnified to the nth degree on this mind-expanding trip. Their sound is pure late '60s, but isn't the sound of any specific band from that era as they were as likely to be channeling the Nazz as the Jimi Hendrix Experience. A bounding leap forward in Parker's brand of psychedelic pop, Lonerism encapsulates a wide-screen worldview liberally doused with optimism, synthesized tropicalia, hints of dreamy melancholy and an unflinching willingness to experiment without forfeiting big hooks and big pop songs.
