Like many artists, Peterson's reputation has been tarnished by the things for which he was most admired. There was also more than a little Chopin in him, which is not very evident in this fine collection of Cole Porter tunes. Like Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter seems an ideal source for Peterson, who is an incomparable ally of verbal and musical dexterity, an improviser who must find musical equivalents for the shimmering rhymes. Peterson's rhythmic gifts and legendary talent are standout features of these performances. Most remarkable, however, is the irresistible swing of this group, whose infectious energy breathes new life into familiar songs. The cohesion of this trio gives the impression that there is only one mind behind their sounds. Joining Mr. Peterson are Ray Brown & Ed Thigpen. Recorded in August of 1959.
