Miles Davis
Sketches of Spain
Columbia 65142
The charismatic trumpeter Davis (who is also heard on flugelhorn here), was the ideal improvising interpreter to communicate the melancholia inherent in these compositions. And Evans (born Ian Ernest Gilmore Green (19120-1988) had shown his affinity for material of this kind as early as 1947, when he made a memorable arrangement of "La Paloma" for Claude Thornhill's orchestra (featuring Louis Mucci, who was in the Trumpet section behind Davis herein) - in essence, an early sketch for Sketches of Spain.
The Classical composer Rodrigo's "Concerto De Aranjuez" and Evans' Solea" are the twin jewels of this collection, the former remains arguably the most glorious jazz treatment of any European classical work, while the latter, a rhythmically intricate march, finds Davis fervently linking the cries of flamenco and the blues.
With 3 additional tracks (19 minutes of new music), new liner notes and session photos, and 20-bit digital remastering (the same gorgeous sound as the triple Grammy winning Complete Columbia Studio Recordings of Miles Davis and Gil Evans box set), Sketches of Spain's orchestral palette has never been more vivid.
