Bitches Brew
Columbia 95086 - 2 LP set on 180g vinyl w/ download
Inspired by the funk of Sly Stone, and the rock of Jimi Hendrix (among others), Miles had the idea to first lay down fat beats, in essence giving the rhythm perhaps an even greater role than the soloists and lay the soloists on top. There are mostly 2 bassists and 2-3 drummers. Soloists heard most often are Miles, and Wayne Shorter, with others chiming in when Miles dictates in these loose jam scenarios. Miles core working group in 1969 was Wayne, Dave Holland, bass, Chick Corea on electric piano, and Jack DeJohnette, drums. For this follow-up to In A Silent Way, Miles added Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul on electric piano, John McLaughlin, Harvey Brooks, Lenny White, Don Alias, Billy Cobham & Airto. This album for better or worse, basically created the jazz-fusion craze. Fusion aficionados will recognize the band names as the artists that went on to create Weather Report, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Headhunters, etc. Another example of Miles in the forefront of yet another jazz movement, and an ESSENTIAL listening experience for jazz or rock fans.
