While Iron Maiden’s debut showed all the promise of a band about to overtake heavy metal, ‘Killers’ made good on that promise. “The Ides of March” builds anticipation for the first true track, queuing “Wrathchild” and singer Paul Di’Anno’s ‘from the gutter’ vibe to pummel eardrums from its release in 1981 through the present day. Boasting a decidedly more vicious sound, the album saw guitarist Adrian Smith enter the fold, though his songwriting prowess would be utilized more on later albums. From the cold-blooded title track to the quick strike of “Twilight Zone,” throw in “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “Drifter” among others and you’ve got another essential Maiden record.
