Herbie's 1972 offering, Crossings (his 3rd of 3 recordings for Warners) finds him digging deeper into the synthesizer. Joining the group is the de-facto 7th member, sythesist Dr Patrick Gleeson. What follows is not so much jazz solos as a collective impressionist sound-painting, with everyone applying dabs of color to the constantly reconfigured canvas. Interestingly, Hancock's next move was to sign to Columbia and record the funk classic, Head Hunters. 
The core band is Hancock, Buster Williams, Benny Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart (and others) and Gleeson.
