Shades of Redd is probably Freddie Redd's crowning achievement in a career of highs. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios i Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in 1960, it was issued the following May. The leader is joined by the criminally under-recorded Tina Brooks, as well as Jackie McLean, Paul Chambers, & Louis Hayes. The interplay between McLeans sweet alto and Brooks's robust tenor makes Shades of Redd a hallmark of its era and an essential addition to any jazz collection.
