A few years after a confidential live debut, the future Queen of Soul signed with Columbia and entered the studio for the first time, accompanied by pianist Ray Bryant and his combo. Produced by John H. Hammond, this calling card album showcases the 18 year old singer who would go on to define soul music. Here, she explores pop repertoire (Over the Rainbow, It Ain't Necessarily So) showing that the label was still searching for her direction. The voice, however, was already unmistakably hers.
