Weather Report
Heavy Weather
Columbia 35142
Weather Report in 1977 consisted of jazz veterans / leaders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, as well as rising (super) star Jaco Pastorius, along with Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena. Jazz fusion had been around for a few years (Bitches' Brew came out in 1970), and WR had had their share of success, but Heavy Weather took fusion to a whole different level. Selling 1/2 a million copies, it remains one of Columbia's best selling jazz releases. The lead track, Birdland, has become a jazz standard, and is performed by high school jazz bands and marching bands to this day!
