Wanda Jackson
Rockin' With Wanda
Wax Time 771825 - reissue of the 1959 Capitol release.
Wanda Jackson's Rockin' With Wanda! from Capitol Records Nashville's storied catalog reissued on 180-gram vinyl. The album has been mastered for vinyl by Ron McMaster at Capitol Mastering and is packaged in true-to-original LP sleeves with restored artwork. Wanda Jackson has become a shimmying emblem of female independence in a male-dominated industry, testing boundaries with her forward style and lyrics about mean men and hard-headed women (and those are the love songs). Her lyrics were ahead of their time, featuring sexually suggestive innuendo and depictions of strong women who did not put up with controlling men. Jackson blazed the trail with a small number of original rockabilly girls, while cementing her place as one of the genre's legends. She was the female equivalent of Elvis Presley’s leather suits and pelvic thrusting, the first woman to bring sex appeal to the rock & roll scene.
Long unavailable on vinyl, this quintessential collector’s edition includes Jackson’s third LP, Rockin’ with Wanda! originally released in 1960. Her finest album, it contains a dozen sides waxed between 1956 and 1959. Included are the iconic rockabilly hits “Fujiyama Mama,” “Honey Bop,” “Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad,” “Rock Your Baby,” and the self-penned “Mean Mean Man.” In contrast, “You’ve Turned to a Stranger” is sung as a twangy country ballad, and “I Gotta Know” splits its time between rockabilly and waltz (as does “I Wanna Waltz” on her 1958 debut album, Wanda Jackson). Jackson was also singing “Rock Your Baby,” with its demand “Rock your baby all night long, and don’t be slow” - a song she wrote herself, no less. The great Buck Owens adds world-class guitar picking and hot licks, and on some cuts, her own band, The Poe Kats, are captured with black rockabilly keyboardist Big Al Downing. Also featuring accompaniment by Joe Maphis and Ralph Mooney, among other luminaries, Wanda Jackson is utterly authoritative on everything she sings.
In addition to this sensational LP, 4 bonus tracks from the same period have been included. This great material represents the cream of the crop from Jackson’s hit-making stretch for the Capitol label during her most inspired years. All of these original gems –which have been brilliantly remastered to achieve the most pristine sound– are simple two-and-a-half-minute songs that convey all the sheer power and emotion of rock & roll.
Besides Buck Owens, other guitar pickers appearing here are Roy Clark, Joe Maphis, & Ralph Mooney
