Dauwhe
Black Saint 120057 - re-issue LP
Reissue of this free-jazz piece, originally released in 1982.
“Dawhe” is the first chapter of John Carter’s “Roots and Folklore” saga. An epic five-part journey through African-American heritage conceived by the great clarinetist-composer and performed by a lineup including Carter himself, Bobby Bradford - cornet, James Newton - flute, Charles Owens - soprano sax, oboe , clarinet, Red Callender - tuba, Roberto Miranda - bass, William Jeffrey - drums, Luis Peralta - percussion.
It is a very free form of jazz, based on the treatment of different musical forms and related subjects, from ancient African mythology to the blues through the “Creative Jazz” movement. A strong musical and cultural statement from one of the West Coast's greatest modern jazz composers.
