Maya Angelou
Miss Calypso
Shellac Disc 025 - re-issue LP

Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Annie Johnson (April 4, 1928 — May 28, 2014) was an American memojirist, popular poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Released in 1957, Maya Angelou’s debut LP “Miss Calypso” was released during a craze for calypso music catalyzed by Harry Belafonte the previous year. Angelou sings every song on the album, and she composed five of them. Behind Angelou’s voice, studio guitarist Tommy Tedesco and percussionist Al Bello created an exotic mood.
