All the material in this LP was recorded "Live" at the Midway Lounge in Pittsburgh and was engineered by bassist Peter Ind. That is to say, Pete set up the mikes and when the group was ready to record, ran down to the dressing room where the tape recorder was set up, turned it on, then ran upstairs, resumed his place in the group and gave the "Go!" sign. The final editing of the tapes was done by Lee Konitz. In several instances, what you hear are not complete numbers: Lee deleted solos that were uninspired or blemished with a goof. What remains he believes is the most representative example of his best work on records until now. That is why the title of this LP is "The Real Lee Konitz". Joining Mr. Konitz and Mr Ind are Billy Bauer on guitar, and Dick Scott on drums. Don Ferrara's trumpet joins in on Pennies In Minor, and Sweet & Lovely.
