Kanye's 2004 debut album was 5 years in the works, during the time he gained accolades for his production work. Despite the industry not wanting anything to do with him, it was a huge success. Offering an alternative to the hard gangsta rap of the time, West broke through with humor, and themes of family, consciousness, religion, materialism, racism and higher education.
