Pianist McCoy Tyner recorded over 80 albums since his 1962 debut LP as a leader, Inception, and won five Grammy Awards, and considerably broadened the horizons of the genre, blending modal jazz and fusion, hard bop and free jazz. Inception presents the John Coltrane Quartet rhythm section of that period, with Art Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, and reviews at the time it was released mentioned that it was like a Coltrane disc without Coltrane. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at Englewood Cliffs, NJ on Jan 10 & 11, 1962.
