Betty Davis
Light in the Attic 026 - re-issue LP

In the 1970s, Betty Davis defied genre and gender by pushing her voice to extremes and embracing the erotic. She articulated a kind of pre-punk, funk-blues fusion that had yet to be normalized in the mainstream - a style that few musicians have come close to replicating. As one of the first Black women to write, arrange, and produce her own albums, Betty was a visionary who disregarded industry boundaries and constraints. Raw, unapologetic, and in full control, Betty paved the way for generations of future artists who said "Funk You" to the music industry and social norms. In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. That year, Davis assembled an all-star line-up of musicians to record an album that would eventually land her a place as an American cult icon. Betty's self-titled debut introduced the world to her avant-garde vocal style that ranged from ferocious growls, to quivering whispers, to a full on attack. Mastered from the original tapes, Betty Davis unveils a raw and radical sound that fuses blues, rock, and funk in a way that predates some of the industry's most popular trends of the decade. The album features such gems as “If I’m In Luck I Might Get Picked Up” and “Game Is My Middle Name.” and was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone’s rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters. Included a 20 page booklet featuring new liner notes by Danielle Maggio interviewing Betty, plus unseen photos, and lyrics.
