Ornette Coleman - In All Languages - 2 LP set

 

In 1987, Ornette recorded his reunited classic Quartet (Ornette, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden & Billy Higgins) and his current electric band, Prime Time (Denardo Coleman, Calvin Weston, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Charlie Ellerbe, Al MacDowell, & Bern Nix) and released it as a 2 LP set; one LP for each band. Many of the songs are repeated giving a varied look at the compositions. Option magazine remarked that In All Languages showcases the differences between his original quartet's free jazz and the harmolodic funk of his Prime Time band. Geoffrey Himes of JazzTimes said the album's approach "may sound very avant-garde, but it's not so different from a Dixieland combo that stands to solo all at once on the final chorus or from a pre-war blues band that shifts from D to D-flat and from 12 bars to 13 in pursuit of a song." The album was released on the short-lived Caravan of Dreams label, that was connected to the ground-breaking Caravan of Dreams entertainment space in Coleman's home-town of Houston, TX.
