Come to My Garden was Riperton's debut album, hot on the heels of her tenure in Rotary Connection, producer, arranger, conductor, songwriter Charles Stepney (and 70s house producer for Chess / Argo Records) recorded this album originally for the GRT label with lush orchestration and a jazzy soft-pop feel reminiscent of contemporary Roberta Flack. The initial release was unsuccessful, but re-issued in 1973, partially to cash in on her Capitol Records Smash, Perfect Angel by Janus Records. While different from that album, it is now considered to be a classic, and contains many enduring, if woefully unknown classics. Musicians performing on the album include Ramsey Lewis, Phil Upchurch, Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire). Minnie Riperton is arguably one of the most overlooked soul voices of this era.
