Rhino / Sire - Limited Rocktober release - 2 LP set on Crystal Clear vinyl!
After years making lackluster and commercially unsatisfying albums on other labels, this 1989 debut for Sire Records - his first in 3 years - represented a come-back of sorts, and was a huge critical and commercial success. Perhaps returning to 2 guitars, bass and drums was the key. Perhaps it was the strength and force of the lyrical content, which touched on everything from AIDS, urban blight, racism, AIDS, child abuse, Jesse Jackson, Donald Trump, the environment and other societal ills, delivered with humor and empathy. The lyrics through the 14 songs are profuse and carefully woven, making New York Reed's most overtly conceptual album since the early 70s. In fact, in the liner notes, Reed invited the listener to hear the album in one setting, "as though it were a book or a movie".
