Billie Holiday
Billie's Blues

special import issue of her rare live + studio sessions of the late 40s & early 50s. The live tracks were recorded on her only overseas tour with the Leonard Feather Jazz Club USA tour. Her trio is Carl Drinkard on piano, Elaine Leighton on drums and Red Mitchell on bass. The first 4 studio sides are interesting in that at the time of their recording, Lady Day was not signed to any label - post Decca and pre-Verve, and were later released by Aladdin in 1951. Her band on these 4 tunes consist of Tiny Grimes, Haywood Henry, Bobby Tucker (her regular pianist around this time), and unidentified bassist and drummer. The last tune is her only recording with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. It was recorded in the early days of Capitol Records, and as Billie was under contract with Columbia at the time, she appeared thinly-disguised on the credits as Lady Day". All these recordings constitute a fine listening experience, and nicely fill in the holes that appear in the Billie discography.
