1969 - 1971 marked a time when the de facto leader of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, had somewhat relinquished his duties as the all-around whiz-kid. While he is all over these recordings, the rest of the guys stepped up in a big way. Songwriting and production credits show a real group effort on most of these sessions. Mike, Al & Bruce all have writing credits, but extra credit goes especially to Carl (on both albums), and Dennis (on Sunflower). Dennis was VERY prolific during this time, but for reasons spelled out in the booklet, had no writing credits on Surf's Up. He is represented by 6 (mostly) unreleased tracks from the era. Hearing these tunes for the first time is a real revelation. As are most of the deluxe offerings. Both albums are represented in gatefold jackets with the original artwork (Surf's Up was not a gatefold originally, so this is unique). There is also a mock up 12x12 of the original artwork for the album that was intended to be called Add Some Music, and eventually became Surf's Up. And another 12x12 litho of a little-seen photo of the group.
Like we said...A must for fans and fanatics alike.
