Sextant
Columbia / Music on Vinyl 522 - 180g audiophile re-issue
Herbie Hancock's eleventh studio album, originally released in 1973, presents us with his last recording with his Mandwishi-era group, his first for Columbia Records, and finds him in deeper exploration of electronics. His arsenal includes; Fender Rhodes, Hohner D-6 Clavinet with fuzz wah-wah and Echoplex, Dakha-Diu-Bello, Melotron, and Steinway Grand, while his partner in electronic crime, Dr. Patrick Gleeson, is playing the ARP 2600 Synthesizer. Other musicians appearing are Benny Maupin, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, & Billy Hart.
AllMusic called the album a "gem" which features "a kind of post-modal, free impressionism while gracing the edges of funk. Rolling Stone wrote that, "taking his cue from Miles Davis' swirling, anarchic Bitches Brew and On the Corner, Hancock went even further into outer space [...] much of Sextant, with its twittering, burbling effects, amounts to a primitive version of Nineties ambient music. The album was called an "uncompromising avant-funk masterpiece by Paste Magazine.
