Blue Note 1576 re-issue LP
Pianist Sonny Clark started with Bud Powell as his musical role model but by the mid-1950s had his own irresistible style. Clark set the standard for hard bop musicians by mastering the bebop vocabulary while also looking ahead and not being shy to include soulful phrases, the blues, and ideas from other sources in his playing.
Sonny's Crib, which has the remarkable frontline of Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller and John Coltrane, features many inspired solos, with Byrd and 'Trane competing with Clark for honors. "News For Lulu" and an uptempo "With A Song In My Heart" are among the gems heard on this intriguing date, a definitive hard bop session that still sounds fresh, lively and vital a half-century later.
With Donald Byrd, Curtis Fuller, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers & Art Taylor.
This re-issue is curious, in that the catalogue number shown is 1576, which indicates mono, (stereo would be 81576) yet in the upper L corner of the back jacket, it clearly states Stereo. Without opening it, we don't know for sure what you'll get, but we guess it's stereo. The pic of the back is not the one you'll get, in that it shows Hi-Fidelity, instead of Stereo, and the bottom line in the pic does not appear on ours. Otherwise, they are the same. (no barcode)
